‘Flows and Floor’ a shop floor layout optimization simulation was conducted in the MBA lobby for the MBA students. The students of MBA sem 2 are studying Operations Management as a core subjects. They are learning the concepts like –optimization, Layout , flow, shop floor , material handling etc in their classrooms. This activity on Layout was conducted by Kaizen Club to make the students learn the actual nuances of layout.

It was a group activity, where each group was assigned a different facility to arrange in a given floor area. The closeness requirement of various department/section along with their dimensions were also given to the students.   The students were required to develop the layout model of the given problem within 1 hour time .They were given material and logistics to develop the layout. They had to cut the dummies of machine from the thermocol sheet and glue them in the scaled space. They had to show the material flows and other features in the layout using chalks/labels.

The layouts were evaluated on the basis of degree of optimization done, flow, functionality, visual appeal (cleandiness, labeling, modeling, innovativeness and landscaping of extra space allotted) by  Prof Naman Shrivastav and Prof Juhi Kamakoty.Certificates were awarded to the winners. .

The students ,other than certificates took away same important learnings and skills of shop floor management. They got the feel of shopfloor and got exposed to what exactly is meant by layout optimization and above all complexities involved in optimization .The entire simulation activity was conceptualized, designed and organized by Prof Juhi Kamakoty
