The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a part-time Helicopter Pilot in the Wildlife Services Division. This position is in state government, located in Oklahoma County, OK.

The hourly pay for this position is up to $40.00 based on education and experience.

Position Description: This position is a helicopter pilot position that works with other members of Wildlife Services to safely place crew in a position to use firearms in the elimination of wildlife throughout Oklahoma.

Typical Functions:

  • Transports Wildlife Damage Control Specialists to and from various locations in single engine aircraft.
  • Pilot aircraft in all phases of low altitude road inventory activities, survey and observation functions.
  • Pilot helicopter in low altitude flights to conduct aerial hunting activities.
  • Use of OnX Maps and Spidertracks while flying.
  • Performs pre-flight planning such as pre-flight inspection of aircraft or helicopter and checking weather conditions along air routes to be used; notifies or provides for notification of passengers regarding changes in scheduled flights.
  • Maintains current logbooks necessary to the operation of the aircraft.

Level Description: The Helicopter Pilot job family has only one level and incumbents will perform responsible work operating and maintaining aircraft in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration requirements.

Education and Experience: Requirements consist of possession of a current Commercial Pilot Certificate and a valid and current First-Class or Second-Class FAA medical certification.

  • 1500 hours total flight time, 1200 hours PIC (Pilot in Charge) time,
  • 100 hours flight time in the appropriate class size aircraft (206B),
  • 100 hours flight time in a helicopter equipped with a turbine engine,
  • 100 hours PIC flight in the preceding 12 months,
  • 250 hours flight experience as PIC for wildlife damage management, or 250 hours flight experience in aerial live capture, darting, or tagging/marking operations in low level flight and maneuvering, or 500 hours flight experience in Wildlife Services type of flying.

Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge in tracking and behavior of wildlife in areas where agriculture producers and stakeholders are experiencing damage and economic loss.

For pilots who do not have the above specialized low-level requirement, other low level aviation experience may be substituted.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities: Requirements include knowledge of various types of navigation, meteorology, radio operation, aircraft maintenance and civil air regulations applicable to properly operate the particular type of aircraft involved. Ability is required to operate the aircraft assigned, at low-level flight, in strong winds, and with distractions; to fly at minimum speeds, low altitudes and over unfavorable terrain under visual flight rules, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to assess situational demands and adopt effective courses of action; to accurately follow oral and written instructions; and to accurately complete forms and reports.

Special Requirements:

  • Must maintain any required licenses, certifications or other credentials for the length of employment.
  • Overnight travel is required.
  • Must posses a valid Oklahoma Driver license.
  • Must posses current flight physical for length of employment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is a field position and will be required to work in all types of Oklahoma weather conditions. This position will be exposed to firearms as well as other outdoor environmental factors. Must have the ability to lift and transport at least 50 pounds over all types of terrain and the ability able to climb ladders.

Additional Information:

Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position. Frequent overnight or weekend work could be required, especially in peak season.
