Job Description

Senior Staff Accountant – Energy Sector

📍 Houston, TX | Hybrid

A high-growth, profitable tech-driven energy company is looking for a Senior Staff Accountant to join its dynamic team. This organization is transforming the clean energy landscape by leveraging AI and machine learning to bring more predictability and efficiency to power markets. With a fast-growing presence as a retail energy provider in Texas (ERCOT), the company offers an entrepreneurial environment where teamwork, continuous learning, and integrity are core values.

About the Role:

This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in accounting within the energy sector, particularly retail electricity. You’ll play a key role in managing day-to-day financial operations—including billing, accruals, vendor payments, reconciliations, and reporting. The right candidate will be comfortable handling the financials of multiple legal entities and working cross-functionally with operations and portfolio teams.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain and record daily financial transactions in QuickBooks Online
  • Manage monthly accruals, income, and expenses
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and reconciliations
  • Handle vendor payments via Bill.com
  • Oversee account mapping between accounting and billing platforms
  • Reconcile bank and broker accounts
  • Assist with tax filings (sales tax, GRT, 1099s) and regulatory reporting
  • Process utility invoices and ensure timely approvals and payments
  • Reconcile EDI transactions (e.g., 810 vs. 820 invoices)
  • Collaborate on ad-hoc finance projects and help shape best practices in energy retail accounting

What We’re Looking For:

  • 5+ years of accounting experience in retail electricity or gas markets
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA a plus)
  • Experience with VertexOne or similar platforms is a bonus
  • Knowledge of industry-specific tax and regulatory standards is highly valued

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a mission-driven company that blends clean tech, finance, and data science—all while maintaining profitability and growth without outside funding.
